4th century mosaics from ancient Roman villa restored and reinstalled at

Restoration work was completed on a floor mosaic in a Roman villa at the ancient city of Pompeiopolis in the Taşköprü district of Kastamonu. The mosaic, believed to date to the 4th century, was repaired and reinstalled in its original place, making the structure more visible and its construction phases traceable.

Pompeiopolis was one of the largest cities in the Paphlagonia region during the Roman period in terms of the area it covered. The archaeological site is located in the Zımbıllı Tepe area of the Taşköprü district and was the capital of the historical Paphlagonia region.

Associate Professor Dr. Mevlüt Eliüşük from the Department of Archaeology at Karabük University Faculty of Arts leads the excavations on behalf of the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism. He explained to Haberler, “There was excessive deformation in the mosaic and separation from the mortar it was in.” As a result, the team completely removed the mosaics from the original places. In their laboratory, over a period of three months, the mosaics were cleaned one by one, separated, and organized.

“It is one of the 3 or 4 largest villas in Anatolia,” Eliüşük stated to Sözcü. The Roman villa at Pompeiopolis covers an area of 1,800 square meters.

Taşköprü Mayor Hüseyin Arslan expressed that the ancient city of Pompeiopolis will become a suitable place for visitors. “The mosaics on the ground are worth seeing,” he stated to T24.
