How can you not be romantic about baseball?
Things hit a boiling point Thursday night at Kauffman Stadium in Game 4 of the American League Divisional Series (ALDS) between the New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals, this following a tense play that popped in the sixth inning at second base.
Sparked up by Yankees third baseman Jon Berti, Royals third baseman Maikel Garcia was caught in a 3-6 double play and attempted to get out of it by sliding into second where New York shortstop Anthony Volpe was. After the fact, it appeared that Garcia had a problem with how Volpe tagged him, and in the process of this, Volpe gave Garcia a pat on the back as he was going back to the dugout. Needless to say, the smarta** antic didn’t make Garcia happy, with the infielder looking back while he was walking off the field. That’s when Yankees third baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. got involved, with the former Miami Marlin chirpin’ at Garcia after his reaction.
Before things escalated even further with Chisholm and Garcia, New York second baseman Gleyber Torres got between them, but though he separated the two, the situation ratcheted up even further with each bench clearing and both bullpens swooping in.
It didn’t take long for things to settle down, with both teams going back to their dugouts and bullpens, but wow, what a fiery moment.
