Welp, that didn’t last long.
The loophole that Oregon used to take time off the clock near the close of their Saturday victory against Ohio State has been shut down by the NCAA.
Releasing an official release Wednesday, the NCAA laid down a fresh interpretation of the rules regarding how a penalty should be called when 12 players are caught on the field with two minutes or less remaining on the clock — the interpretation will apply to both halves. Per the NCAA, if a defense features 12 active players on their side, the offense will not only be rewarded with a 5-yard penalty, but they’ll also have the option to reset the game clock as well back to what it was when the snap happened.
The only exception that wouldn’t allow a time change is if one of the 12 defensive players was trying to exit the field and there was no impact on the play.
Dan Lanning, the head coach of the Ducks, admitted Monday that his team had purposely put 12 players on the field when they were on defense to take time off the clock in a move that led them to a 32-31 win over the Buckeyes.
Here is the new NCAA rule interpretation for having 12 defenders on the field with less than two minutes left.
Game clock will be reset if the 12th player participated in the play (won’t if he was just running off)
