They said NIL would be like professional sports… This is a lot wilder.
According to an announcement from the University of Memphis, forward Tyreek Smith is no longer a member of the Tigers men’s basketball team and will be entering into the transfer portal just six months and some change after he transferred from SMU back in the offseason.
After a transfer is complete, it will be Smith’s fifth different school in five campaigns, with his previous four being Memphis, SMU, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech. (RELATED: Opening Night Brings Us Our First Major Upset Of College Basketball Season As UCF Takes Out No. 13 Texas A&M)
Smith’s exit came just hours before Memphis‘ season-opening game taking on Missouri, and only weeks following the Baton Rouge native taking two personal days away from the program due to a dispute with a name, image and likeness deal.
“Tyreek informed the staff that he would like to explore other opportunities,” said the Tigers’ athletic department in an official statement that was sent to The Commercial Appeal. “We would like to thank Tyreek for his hard work and dedication while at the University of Memphis and wish him the best of luck.”
With the Mustangs in the 2023-24 season, Smith averaged a stat line of 8.2 points-per-game and 5.4 rebounds-per-game.
