The “Pony Express” has made it clear: They’re all in for a national championship.

Cole Leinart, a Class of 2026 quarterback, announced his commitment Wednesday to SMU. Leinart is the son of college football legend Matt Leinart, who won repeat national championships (2003-04) and a Heisman Trophy with USC as their starting QB. Out of Redondo, California, Leinart received offers from Pittsburgh, Colorado, Georgia State and UNLV. In the ’26 class, he’s ranked as the No. 81 best quarterback in the nation, and with his commitment, he’s now the second member of the Mustangs’ recruiting class for that particular year. The other is cornerback Victor Lincoln. In the Class of 2025, SMU also has another quarterback commit in four-star Ty Hawkins, who is out of IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.

SMU landed their highest ranking ever in the College Football Playoff era in the latest AP Top 25 college football poll, coming in at No. 13 after smashing then-undefeated Pittsburgh by a 48-25 score. Leinart was present for the contest.

“Way to go, bud. Proud of you. This is just the beginning!” tweeted Matt Leinart.

A four-star quarterback and Matt Leinart’s son … Pretty safe to say that SMU has a bright future ahead of them.

And as a fan of “Pony Exce$$” …

… which in turn made me a fan of the Mustangs, I’m all for it!
