Shortly before former President Donald Trump became President-elect Donald Trump, it was revealed that the national average price for a gallon of regular gas increased on Wednesday, slightly rising to $3.107 from Tuesday’s price of $3.102, according to AAA

This was the first release of the national average for gas prices after the 2024 U.S. presidential election. Gas prices were a crucial issue throughout the year before the election, but its importance subsided recently as gas prices trended downward for the last several months. While still significantly higher than when former President Donald Trump was in office, the recent falling prices seemed to lessen public outrage heading into the election.

Washington, D.C.

The day after the nation elected its next president, the average price for a gallon of regular gas decreased in Washington, D.C., coming in at $3.268 per gallon, a drop from $3.275 on Tuesday. Wednesday’s price was less expensive than a week ago, when regular gas was $3.29 per gallon. Gas prices have been in the same range for the last month in the nation’s capital, as a gallon of regular gas was $3.296 a month ago.

Maryland

Gas prices remained the same as on Election Day in Maryland, coming in at $3.057 per gallon on Wednesday. This is cheaper than the price of gas a week ago in the state when regular gas cost $3.103 per gallon. Prices are also more affordable than a month ago when residents in Maryland paid $3.234 per gallon for regular gas.

Delaware

Gas prices in Delaware increased slightly on Wednesday, with a gallon of regular gas rising to $2.965 from $2.959 on Tuesday. Overall, prices have decreased in the state and are less expensive than a week ago, when a gallon of regular gas in Delaware was $3.013, and a month ago, when it was $3.192.

Virginia

Gas prices in Virginia have remained steady over the last month with only slight fluctuations. On Wednesday, a gallon of regular gas was $3.003, a tiny drop from Tuesday’s price of $3.004. A week ago, residents in Virginia paid $3.042 per gallon for regular gas, a minimal difference from a month ago, when the price was $3.045.

Oklahoma

The Sooner State remained the state with the cheapest gas in the nation on Wednesday, costing $2.637 per gallon. This was a slight increase from Tuesday’s pricing of $2.635 per gallon. Recently, Oklahoma overtook Texas as the state with the least expensive gas in the nation, and Texas recently overtook Mississippi for that same honor. The two states flipped their positions earlier this week and remained that way on Wednesday. Mississippi now has the second-least expensive prices for gas in the nation, coming in at $2.684 per gallon, and Texas is now third at $2.685 per gallon.

Hawaii

Gas prices in Hawaii continue to soar, however, as the Aloha State remains the state with the most expensive gas prices in the country. With a price of $4.576, Hawaii outpaced California as the state with the highest prices on Wednesday. The Golden State was slightly less expensive than Hawaii, coming in at $4.532 for a gallon of regular gas.
