One of the craziest last-second moments in sports history occurred in an unlikely setting: a college soccer game.
Stanford Men’s Soccer punched its ticket to the quarterfinals of the ACC tournament after defeating Notre Dame 3-2 on Wednesday night. Stanford’s Dylan Hooper scored the winning goal in the game’s final seconds with a last-ditch, half-field boot that sailed over his entire team and looped into the top corner of the net, leaving the goalie and Notre Dame defense absolutely stunned.

Half-field as time expires? What makes this goal so special, besides the sheer distance the ball traveled, is that the time was expiring. Unlike professional soccer, in high school or college, a fixed amount of time counts down and marks the end of each half. The moment the clock hits zero, the game is over. There’s no extra time tacked on by the ref, and no leeway at all. So, it’s incredibly rare to witness a true soccer buzzer-beater, something you will never see watching the English Premier League or the World Cup. I have been a soccer fan for as long as I can remember, and I’m not sure I’ve seen a goal as wild as this one. I’ve seen some absolute long-distance rockets, last-minute winners and beautifully-worked team goals. But to hit a legit buzzer-beater with a half-field shot (which rarely ever happens nowadays, as soccer players are shooting less and less from long distances) is something out-of-this-world special.
Congratulations to Stanford Men’s Soccer and Hooper for the electric win and a goal for the ages.
