A Jan. 6 cop and former liberal celebrity relished in a fantasy about dying in a shootout with federal agents while speaking with The Washington Post for a profile published Nov. 6.
Michael Fanone, a former CNN contributor, Washington, D.C., Metropolitan police officer, and something of a folk hero for liberals addicted to MSNBC, was assaulted at the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol Riot. He later testified before the January 6 select committee and called the rioters “terrorists.” Liberals long heralded Fanone as a hero, a stalwart defender of Democracy, a Resistance célèbre. What is Fanone up to now? CNN never renewed his contract and the Harris-Walz campaign never used him as a surrogate, probably because no one cares about Jan. 6 anymore, let alone what he has to say about it. A true dissident that he is, Fanone is holed up in the hinterland, crushing Japanese beers and awaiting martyrdom. Here’s the opening to WaPo’s gushing profile:
IN THE BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS — Michael Fanone leaped off the couch and lumbered toward his fridge, retrieving his fifth (or sixth?) beer. He glanced at the TV, took a sip of Sapporo and offered his first thought on a second Donald Trump presidency.
“Better f—ing arm yourselves.”
His tone was somehow both furious and serene. He saw this coming, and on Tuesday night some in America were starting to arrive at the place he’d already been living for the past 46 months. “I didn’t vote for that motherf—er,” he said, “and I fought tooth and nail to prevent this day from f—ing coming.”
He’d learned about more than 300 “deep state” enemies that Trump’s self-described “secretary of retribution” had compiled in a target list, as Raw Story first reported; Fanone says he saw his name on it. If Trump wants him imprisoned, he’d rather be killed in a shootout.”I’ll die right here on my f—ing house,” he said. “I’m not going to be in some ‘Apprentice’ f—ing military tribunal.” Fanone insists that he’s not some “prepper weirdo,” that he’s just someone who understands how law enforcement can be weaponized against people — “and I fully expect that to happen.”
Whoah, whoah, whoah, buddy. Maybe lay off the sauce and the self-importance for a second? I get that you have fallen far off the glittering D.C. map and have landed into irrelevance in the Blue Ridge Mountains, but let’s dial it back a bit. You are beginning to sound like a character in a BlueAnon porno novel written by Nicolle Wallace under a pseudonym.
Off-the-grid, prepper Fanone kind of reminds me of Rust Cohle from the HBO show, “True Detective.” Exiled, slightly delusional, crushing brews. Except that Fanone’s not nearly as complicated as Matthew McConaughey. He wishes he was that complex, enigmatic and dark.
It’s like Fanone has discovered a new bit. He went from cop to cable news celebrity to self-parodying prepper in a matter of years. Let’s see how long it lasts. It wouldn’t shock me if he came out of the woodwork for the 2026 midterms. A run for Congress, perhaps? That’s if he survives his high-noon standoff with the Trump Gestapo.
