Legendary actor Denzel Washington fumbled in his attempt to shake hands with King Charles III at the “Gladiator II” premiere in London on Wednesday.

The actor appeared caught off guard during the royal encounter, seemingly unsure how to navigate the handshake with King Charlesfamously large fingers. Washington looked a little stunned while lined up on the red carpet with other actors before entering the theater and it was the king who smoothly initiated the handshake.

“I didn’t know if I was supposed to grab your hand or not,” Washington said in the viral video.

The king kindly exchanged words with the actor, helping to ease the awkwardness of the moment. Washington flashed a nervous smile as the tension lifted.

He asked Washington about Macrinus, his character in “Gladiator II.”

“I’m, just an awful … I’m a lovely man you’ll see,” Washington said sarcastically. “I’m a lovely chap.”

At this point, Washington had missed his chance and King Charles had already begun moving past him toward Pedro Pascal. The actor then regained his composure and tried to salvage the moment by getting a few words in.

King Charles, offering a compliment, said, “You’ve been in so many films, it’s fantastic.” Washington responded with a few thank-you’s before the exchange ended. (RELATED:  Denzel Washington Teases Role In Next ‘Black Panther’ Movie)
