Jay Leno was seen walking in public wearing an eye patch and stopped to explain that he suffered some injuries after taking a really bad fall.
A video of his bruised face was shared Tuesday by TMZ and Leno took a moment to remove the eye patch to give cameras a close-up of his black eye.
“I was staying at a hotel that was on a hill,” Leno explained to TMZ, as he shared that there was a restaurant he wanted to go to at the bottom. “I didn’t have a car.”
He said he had to walk “about a mile and a half around.” In the moment he thought, “oh, the hill doesn’t look steep, it’s about 60, 70 feet.”
However, the walk proved more difficult than he expected. “And then I fell down … rolled down the hill,” Leno told TMZ. “Hit my head on a rock, knocked me in the eye.”
Leno then revealed he didn’t stop to nurse his wounds after tumbling down the hill because he was focused on maintaining his commitment.
“I did the show and then when I came back to LA, I went to the hospital,” Leno told the outlet. When asked why he didn’t seek immediate medical attention he said, “it was only a couple hours before the show …”
He continued, “there’s 2600 people,” as he calculated how many fans he’d be disappointing if he suddenly canceled his show. His work ethic led him to continue.
Someone in the background shouted, “The show must go on,” and Leno agreed with the statement.
His face was visibly swollen, and TMZ reported Leno was sporting a bandaged wrist during his comedy show.

This is just one of many incidents that Leno has overcome. He has also suffered broken bones in a motorcycle crash and third-degree burns in a car fire that erupted in his well-known garage.
He didn’t provide details about his injuries or explain if anyone helped him when he came to a stop at the bottom of the hill.
