Richard Gere waved his middle finger at Savannah Guthrie on the “Today” show Nov. 20, after she censored a clip from his new series that included the very same action.
Gere was promoting his new espionage thriller “The Agency,” and “Today” showed a clip from the Paramount+/Showtime series on their screen. The show cut the scene off right before Gere’s character made the gesture, and he reacted by completing the scene just as it cut off at that moment.
“You just did an obscene gesture on this family morning show!” the stunned Guthrie said to Gere after she held up her stack of papers in an attempt to hide his hand.
“I’m bleeping you!” Guthrie told the legendary actor.
The star raised his middle finger just one day after Cher appeared on the NBC show and swore without warning.
“You know, Cher was on here doing an F-bomb yesterday so I don’t know what’s happening!” Guthrie said as she expressed her shock over the recent events.
Gere explained his position while making other hand motions — none of which were inappropriate at that point.
“You didn’t show but that’s what I did in the piece!” Gere said.
“That’s what the clip was!”
Guthrie reiterated her position.
“That’s what the clip was but we cut that part out. But then you did it live!” she said.
Gere pressed the matter further and remained adamant about the importance of the gesture in the clip.
“I could see that, but it didn’t make any sense without that!” he said.
Later in the interview, Gere told Guthrie that it wasn’t his intention to raise his middle finger on television.
“My hand did that, I didn’t do it — I have no control!” he said as they laughed. (RELATED: Kim Kardashian’s Son Flips Paparazzi The Bird)
