The rivalry between the University of Michigan (Michigan) and Ohio State is among the most intense and storied in college football, but the last game of the 2024 season was particularly violent. It escalated into chaos, culminating in an on-field brawl that required police intervention and the use of pepper spray. While rivalry games bring passion and excitement to college sports, they should never lead to violence.
Ohio State came into the November 30th game ranked #2 and was projected to win, with many thinking of Michigan as the underdog. However, as reported by Sports Illustrated, Michigan came in strong, securing a victory that not only dashed Ohio State’s hopes of making the playoffs but also kept them out of the Big Ten Championship game. Sports Illustrated stated that the tension reached a boiling point when, following their win, Michigan players Derrick Moore—edge rusher—and Rod Moore—defensive back—planted their flag on the center of the field, a symbolic gesture many interpreted as a provocation.

A chaotic scene followed.
What began as a typical rivalry spat quickly became an all-out altercation involving multiple players and coaches. The fight lasted for nearly five minutes before escalating to the point of police involvement. Officers reportedly used pepper spray to break up the fight, and one officer was injured during the incident. The violence that ensued not only tarnished the reputation of both teams but also left many questioning the conduct of the players and coaches involved.
In response to the brawl, ESPN noted that the Big Ten took action, imposing a $100,000 fine on both teams involved. This penalty acknowledges the lack of sportsmanship exhibited and recognizes how such behavior violates the league’s sportsmanship policy.
Is this punishment enough?
The Big Ten has yet to announce any suspensions for the players involved in the fight or for those who participated in the flag-planting incident. While the fine may deter future incidents to some extent, it fails to address the root causes of the violence or to send a clear message about the standards of behavior expected from college athletes.
Incidents like these go beyond the field, suggesting significant implications for the reputation of higher education institutions. Universities should be places where student-athletes develop leadership, discipline, and respect, not only in sports but also in life. When athletes engage in such violent and disrespectful actions, they threaten the values these institutions are to uphold.

The culture of college athletics, particularly in high-stakes rivalry games, often fosters an “all is fair in love and war” mentality, where winning at any cost becomes the priority—a dangerous mindset that leads to violent altercations.
Universities must proactively instill values of sportsmanship and respect in student-athletes by setting clear behavioral expectations, promoting integrity, and holding athletes accountable. Programs fostering emotional intelligence and conflict resolution are essential to help athletes handle pressure without resorting to violence. The Michigan-Ohio State brawl highlights the urgent need for college athletics to uphold positive values rather than fuel hostility. While Big Ten fines are a start, lasting change requires a cultural shift prioritizing respect and fair play over rivalry-driven aggression.
