The Irish are going to the natty!
Drew Allar, the quarterback of Penn State, stated that his botched pass attempt was him trying to toss the football into the ground. However, that didn’t stop Notre Dame defensive back Christian Gray from diving for the ball, and when he did, the “luck of the Irish” struck with the pigskin falling right into his hands.
Only a few seconds following the interception, Gray and the Fighting Irish officially punched their tickets into the national championship to close out a thrill-a-minute 27-24 win Thursday night in Miami’s famous Orange Bowl. Gray’s INT of Allar’s terrible throw came at Penn State’s 42 with only 33 seconds left in the game, resulting in Notre Dame going up the field for 19 yards that set up kicker Mitch Jeter to hit the game-winning 41-yard field goal.
Now sitting at 14-1 on the season, the seventh-seeded Fighting Irish have an opportunity to win their 12th championship in program history, which would be their first since 1988. They take on the winner of Texas and Ohio State, who play Friday night in their College Football Playoff semifinal (Cotton Bowl). The national championship takes place Jan. 20 in Atlanta.
