The midair collision between American Airlines flight 5342 and three soldiers aboard the Black Hawk Sikorsky H-60 was an unspeakable tragedy, as 67 people instantly died Wednesday night around 9 p.m. Yet, as the nation mourns this loss of life, some sought to cast blame for the accident immediately without having any knowledge as to why it happened and with the investigation into the crash barely beginning. It was a despicable performative practice that exploited the tragic deaths of innocent people for political gain.

The most egregious example of this was arguably Rep. Norma Torres, a Democratic congresswoman from California. Less than two hours after the accident, at 10:43 p.m., she posted a screenshot on her X account of a Democratic propaganda piece criticizing President Donald Trump’s decision to freeze the hiring of air traffic controllers. Juxtaposed over the picture were the words “Praying for all involved.” The picture and the text were under the following caption: “Praying for the families and demanding answers.”

Torres implied that Trump was to blame for the crash — as if the president’s directive about a week ago had anything to do with it. It was yet another example of the vile and inflammatory vitriol that regularly comes from Democratic politicians. Recovery efforts for the bodies of the victims submerged in the Potomac River in the carnage from the wreck hadn’t even started yet, and an elected left-wing political official was making baseless and uninformed inferences, blaming Trump. Her sole objective was to exploit a tragedy for political gain. It was utterly disgraceful. It was indicative of today’s Democratic Party.

Furthermore, as if her first post wasn’t bad enough, Torres stood firm on her exploitative efforts a little over two hours later. In another classless move, the Democrat reposted it, only this time adding another radical, ideologically fueled comment, writing, “#TRUMP #Chaos.” Without any facts, knowledge, or general common sense, the Democratic congresswoman blamed Trump for the horrific tragedy.

But Torres wasn’t alone. Other Democrats echoed her sentiments and followed her lead. Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) also seemingly blamed the president’s executive order for the crash. The failed vice presidential candidate posted an article on X, “Trump Gutted Key Aviation Safety Committee Before D.C. Plane Crash.” Above the article, the senator from Virginia captioned, “Apparently Trump doesn’t believe that air safety is national security.”

For a political party whose members spent the better part of the last eight years declaring that honesty and truthfulness were vital to democracy, they have routinely shown zero hesitation in incorporating lies, dishonesty, and deceitfulness when they see an opportunity to benefit.

“Never let a good crisis go to waste” should be the motto of the Democratic Party. Torres’s words were downright unethical and irresponsible. So, too, were any Democrats who inserted political agendas into the conversation surrounding the tragic deaths of 67 innocent people. Given the speculation that the crash happened because of a mistake by the helicopter pilot, who was believed to be wearing night goggles, which theoretically affected the pilot’s vision, Torres should have to apologize for pouring gasoline on the rhetorical fire regarding the crash.

However, will Democratic congressional leadership hold her accountable? The members of the left-wing political party will squeeze all the juice they can out of this tragedy for their benefit and then patiently wait for the next tragic incident in the nation’s history to pounce on and exploit.

However, to be clear, no politician should immediately cast blame for tragedies without any due diligence. This would also include Trump, who did something similar (though, in my opinion, not nearly as bad as Torres) during a press conference on Thursday. One could argue Trump’s comments were a retort to Torres’s, and some have. However, that’s not a good enough reason to make baseless accusations, especially from the president of the United States. Truth is paramount.

However, one must also notice the hypocrisy here. If Trump’s comments are objectionable, then Torres’s are, too.

Yet, as expected, the anger only seems to go one way. Democrats have expressed outrage at Trump’s comments. Their accomplices in the legacy media have followed. However, little attention has been given to the congresswoman’s social media posts. This is easily verifiable with a simple internet search, showing many stories criticizing Trump but very few, if any, applying the same standards to Torres.

Investigations should be completed without being tainted by political games. Any politician who does so, regardless of office or political party, is engaging in conduct not only detrimental to the investigative process but also the country’s best interests.
