Sports fans in Canada booed and jeered the U.S. national anthem at multiple professional sporting events over the weekend in response to President Donald Trump’s promise to implement 25% tariffs on the country’s imports into the United States.

On Saturday night, Ottawa fans booed the Star-Spangled Banner before the Senators played the Minnesota Wild in an NHL matchup. Calgary Flames fans similarly jeered the U.S. national anthem ahead of the game against the Seattle Kraken.

On Sunday in Toronto, fans booed the U.S. national anthem before the Toronto Raptors faced the Los Angeles Clippers in the NBA. The trend made its way to the West Coast, with Canadian fans mocking the Star-Spangled Banner when the Vancouver Canucks hosted the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday evening.

Calgary, Ottawa, and Toronto’s sports teams won their games, but Detroit came out on top against Vancouver.

The negative reaction to the anthem comes as Trump promised to implement sweeping tariffs on Canadian exports coming into the U.S., creating an all-but-certain trade war with one of the country’s largest trading partners.

Canada promised retaliatory tariffs, initially ordering tariffs of 25% on U.S. imports starting Tuesday, including beverages, cosmetics, and paper products worth 30 billion Canadian dollars or $20 billion USD. A second list of goods is set to be released soon, which will include passenger vehicles, trucks, steel and aluminum products, certain fruits and vegetables, beef, pork, dairy products, aerospace products, and more, according to the Associated Press
