(The Center Square) – The U.S. Senate confirmed Chris Wright Monday as President Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Department of Energy.

Wright, a Colorado native, received yes votes from both U.S. senators from Colorado. They were two of just eight Democrats to vote in favor of Wright’s confirmation, with the final vote coming in at 59-38.

As CEO of Denver-based fracking company Liberty Energy, Wright signals a key shift away from President Joe Biden’s energy policy focus on issues like climate change.

Instead, Wright has promised to join in Trump’s commitment to unleash America’s energy resources, which the president has labeled of the highest importance.

“My dedication to bettering human lives remains steadfast, with a focus on making American energy more affordable, reliable, and secure,” Wright said on social media. “Energy is the lifeblood that makes everything in life possible. Energy matters. I am looking forward to getting to work.”

During Wright’s confirmation hearing, U.S. Sen. John Hickenlooper, D-CO, introduced Wright, which he admitted might shock some.

“He’s indeed an unrestrained enthusiast for fossil fuels in almost every regard,” Hickenlooper said of Wright. “What we are looking at now is the need for a comprehensive approach to energy . . . I have high optimism we can work together.”

While Wright has worked in oil and gas, he has also spent time over his career in the nuclear, solar and geothermal industries.

Energy and climate change groups split over Wright’s confirmation.

American Clean Power congratulated him following his confirmation, stating: “We look forward to partnering to advance DOE’s essential role in driving innovation, ensuring energy security and advancing clean energy solutions. ACP is committed to working with Secretary Wright to address and meet our nation’s rapidly growing electricity demand.”

He did face some backlash from certain groups, though, with groups like Moms Clean Air Force labeling him a “dangerous choice.”

Trump said Wright will be a key leader for his administration’s energy goals, including “driving innovation, cutting red tape and ushering in a new “Golden Age of American Prosperity and Global Peace.’”
