Black queer actress Cynthia Erivo will play Jesus in “Jesus Christ Superstar” at The Hollywood Bowl.

Official Broadway World announced the cast Tuesday on social media. The Hollywood Bowl, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Erivo herself also shared the news early Tuesday.

“Wicked’s Cynthia Erivo will play the title role of Jesus Christ Superstar at a Hollywood Bowl presentation of the classic Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice musical this summer,” the publications wrote on Instagram. It went on to say that the performance will take place starting Aug. 1st and will run through the third of the month. It is the first casting announcement for this production.

Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber are “returning to its rock roots,” the publication continued.

Tony Award-winner Sergio Trujillo is slated to direct and choreograph, while Tony Award-winner Stephen Oremus it set for the musical director and conductor roles. The Telsey Office is designated to complete the rest of casting.

Erivo will perform “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” from the all-female album version of  “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “She Is Risen,” originally released in 2020.

The 38-year-old actress and singer promoted the new project on her social media account. She took to Instagram to tell her 2.6 million fans and followers that she will be “just a little busy this summer,” before writing, “can’t wait.”
