“Wicked” star Cynthia Erivo was tapped to host the 2025 Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on June 8.
Award shows are already struggling for ratings. After this announcement, the Tony’s don’t stand a chance. An awards show host needs to be relatable, engaging, and funny. They need to walk a fine line with their celebrity-studded audience. Erivo doesn’t have the chops to pull this one off, and she certainly doesn’t have the fan following to draw viewers in and drive the ratings up. The Tony Awards can hang up their hats, this show is already over.

Official Broadway World revealed Tuesday that Erivo is set to play Jesus in “Jesus Christ Superstar” at The Hollywood Bowl.
There must be more talent out there, we don’t need to throw all the eggs in Erivo’s basket. There are a slew of other actors that would be perfect for the hosting gig and would add their own, comedic flair to the stage.

“I am so proud and excited to take on this glorious honor,” Erivo said in a statement, according to Billboard.
“I am looking forward to ushering the theater community at large through a night that celebrates the wonderful performances we have witnessed throughout the year. I hope I can rise to the occasion.”
It will be Erivo’s first time hosting the show. She appeared on the Tony Awards stage in 2016 when she won for her role in “The Color Purple.” The Tony Awards will be broadcast live on CBS and will stream on Paramount+. (RELATED: The 2025 Grammy Awards Took ‘Inclusiveness’ Way Too Far)
Actress-singer Ariana DeBose hosted the awards ceremony the previous three years and 2025 marks the fifth year in a row that a woman of color has hosted the show.
