Amateur detectorists found a cache of medieval weaponry near the village of Wielka Tymawa in Poland. They discovered a two-handed sword, or rather a hand-and-a-half sword, and two axe heads from the late medieval period, according to HeritageDaily.
The sword is approximately one meter in length. Researchers believe the objects date back to the 14th or 15th century.
“The sword is exceptionally well preserved, with its hilt, pommel, and guard fully intact,” said Łukasz Szczepański, an archaeologist from the Ostróda Museum, according to Nauka w Polsce. He noted that the steeply pointed blade indicates it was primarily intended for thrusting and piercing armor.
“Undoubtedly, this deposit is related to the floodplains of the Osa. Perhaps there was some crossing or bridge there, where these items were lost by their owners,” said Szczepański, according to Nauka w Polsce.
The River Osa, near which the artifacts were found, historically had a wild and labyrinthine course. Near the place of discovery, there was an early medieval settlement, which may have been used in the late medieval period.
One of the axes still had a fragment of the wooden shaft attached, a rarity in such finds, according to Enikos. Szczepański believes that the good state of preservation may indicate that the military artifacts were submerged in the past.
The provincial conservator of monuments transferred the military artifacts to the Ostróda Museum. Museum staff have already begun work on securing the received artifacts and X-raying the discovery, with the aim of placing them in a permanent exhibition in the future, according to HeritageDaily.
“These artifacts will significantly complement our exhibition, especially since this is the first two-handed sword in our collection. We are a museum institution that deals with, among other things, nurturing medieval history and is located in a former Teutonic castle,” said Szczepański, according to Nauka w Polsce.
