2,600-year-old treasure-filled pottery vessel discovered in Karnak,Egypt

Over the weekend, the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced the discovery of jewelry and other findings at the Karnak temples. An archaeological mission from the Egyptian-French Centre for the Study of the Temples at Karnak (CFEETK) unearthed a collection of rings, amulets, and gold jewelry dating back to the beginning of the Twenty-Sixth Dynasty during excavations in the northwestern sector of the Karnak temple complex, reported Al-Masry Al-Youm.

The jewelry was found inside a small broken pottery vessel, but its parts were intact, and the objects inside it were preserved, according to Akhbarak. The collection includes rings made of gold and other metals, small gold amulets—among them a triad statue of the ancient Egyptian gods Amun, Mut, and Khonsu—as well as a metal brooch, and a large number of beads, some of which are gold-plated or gilded, Al-Masry Al-Youm reported.

“All pieces are in good condition, with the jewelry being remarkably well-preserved,” noted Dr. Mohamed Ismail Khaled. The team is currently working on the restoration and documentation of the discovered findings, which will eventually be displayed in the Luxor Museum, according to Al-Masry Al-Youm.

Archaeologists continue excavations north of the Karnak temple, where huge mudbrick structures from the beginning of the Twenty-Sixth Dynasty have been uncovered. It is believed that these structures were used as workshop or storage areas, likely serving as production bases or warehouses related to the Karnak Temple, Akhbarak reported.
