Back in 2023, the Mid Vermont Christian School girls basketball team forfeited a contest in the state playoffs due to their opponent, Long Trail High School, having a transgender (biological male) athlete on the team.
Action was instantly taken against Mid Vermont from the Vermont Principals Association, banning the school from being able to participate in tournaments across all athletics.
Fast forward two years, and Mid Vermont is still not allowed to compete in state athletics, but they’re not going down without a fight as they currently have a lawsuit against the VPA for being in violation of their First Amendment rights. Girls basketball head coach Chris Goodwin and Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) Senior Counsel Ryan Tucker talked with OutKick on the matter, with the ADF being the firm who is representing the Christian school in their suit taking on the VPA.
“They removed us from the VPA, kicked us out of the league, kicked us out of girls basketball, kicked us out of every sport that they run. So, volleyball, basketball, track, cross-country … they completely removed us from all athletic competition in the state, and it’s been that way for the past two seasons now,” said Goodwin.
He continued.
“There was no way around this issue and the state was going to keep us out unless we changed our religious viewpoints,” said Goodwin. “I really feel like it’s probably the only option we could pursue.”
