People struggling with the cost of living can apply for a £425 grant, East Riding of Yorkshire Council has said.

Those on low incomes and in financial crisis are eligible for the payments, which can cover utility bills, food costs and other items.

The authority said it had been given a further £3.6m by the government “to help local people in need”.

About £14m has been awarded to East Yorkshire residents since the fund started in 2021.

More than £1.7m of the funding paid for free meal vouchers during school holidays.

The council said £387,000 was spent on food banks, healthy homes, heated vests for people to keep warm and to provide white goods to households.

Darren Stevens, council executive director of corporate resources, said: “We are pleased to be able to support more local residents in need, through our Help for Households campaign.

“We know that the cost of living can be a real struggle for some families and encourage those in need to apply for funding as soon as possible.”
