There is only one reason Democrats want noncitizen voting to be easier

Marc Elias, a lawyer who directed the creation of the Steele dossier that concocted false allegations to defeat President Donald Trump in the 2016 election, filed a lawsuit against Wyoming last week challenging its new law requiring people to provide proof of citizenship when registering to vote. The challenge comes after Democrats sued to stop a similar law being implemented in Louisiana, and after all but four Democrats voted against a federal version of the policy in the House of Representatives.

There is only one reason Democrats try so hard to make it easier for noncitizens to vote, and that is that they think most illegal votes will go to them.

Democrats downplay noncitizens voting, saying it is rare. But it isn’t. It’s common, happening often enough to shape the outcome of elections. In the most recent cycle in Virginia, Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) removed more than 6,000 noncitizens from state voting rolls, an action the Biden administration tried to halt in federal court. In Ohio, in the same year, six noncitizens voted and were prosecuted. In 2022, in Georgia, 20 noncitizens voted. In Texas, in 2018, 33 noncitizen votes were cast. And in North Carolina, in 2016, 41 noncitizens were caught voting.

These are small numbers, but they can add up, especially when elections are tight. A 2014 study of the 2008 election found that 6.4% of noncitizens voted that year, and these were enough to give Democrats the 60 Senate votes they needed to pass Obamacare along purely partisan lines.

The policies Louisiana and Wyoming have implemented to stop noncitizens voting and the policies Democrats are blocking in the Senate are eminently reasonable and absolutely necessary to restore integrity and public trust in elections. The House passed the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, which does no more than require states to collect proof of citizenship from anyone who wants to register to vote. Acceptable evidence of citizenship includes a Real ID, a passport, or a birth certificate. The Louisiana and Wyoming laws have the same requirements.

Democrats claim that racial minority voters often lack access to the required identification documents, but this is not backed up by convincing evidence and is, rather, merely the result of the Democrats’ soft bigotry of low expectations about the competence of racial minorities. Voters of all races value free and fair elections and can obtain the proper documents necessary to register. Democrats have even started to argue that identification requirements are a burden on married women in particular because when women change their last names after marriage, it no longer matches their birth certificate.

This just infantilizes married women who are just as capable of getting a Real ID or a passport as men are. These are the same documents that are required by employers hiring new staff. Do Democrats believe the identification requirements for employment are too burdensome for women and minorities? Do they want to get rid of those requirements, too?

A total of 17 jurisdictions, all controlled by Democrats, allow noncitizens to vote in local elections. New York State recently passed a law allowing noncitizens to vote in all statewide elections, but it was struck down by the state Supreme Court for contradicting the New York Constitution. As more Democratic jurisdictions allow noncitizens to register and vote in local elections, more will “accidentally” vote in federal elections as well.

Under federal law, states must allow anyone applying for a driver’s license to register to vote. For decades, this was a harmless act of convenience, but as more Democratic states give driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants, the chances of noncitizens being added to voting rolls rise. Forcing states to require proof of citizenship to register to vote is no more than a commonsense way to keep noncitizens off the voting rolls.

Voting is a fundamental right of citizens that ought to be reserved for citizens, for they have a legitimate vested stake in the nation’s governance. Allowing noncitizens to vote dilutes everyone’s sovereignty, immigrant and native alike. Unfortunately, the Democratic Party is more intent on winning elections than ensuring election integrity.
