He might not be in the lead now, but this is a pretty cool story.
John Pak, a rookie in the PGA Tour and die-hard fan of the New York Knicks, took advantage of his own frustration Thursday, using it as fuel to shoot a 7-under 63 that put him on top of the Charles Schwab Challenge leaderboard after round one.
Raised in New Jersey, Pak had an incredible amount of motivation, and this was because of his Knicks blowing a 14-point advantage in the last three minutes of a 138-135 defeat Wednesday night against the Indiana Pacers in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals. Yes, you read that right. He was so mad about his Knicks losing that he shot himself to the top of the standings. “I’m a die-hard Knicks fan, and that was historically one of the worst losses I’ve ever seen in my life,” stated Pak, who has finished in the top 25 just once out of 12 events this season (he made seven cuts), per ESPN. “There was a fire lit under me, yeah, this morning. I was a little pissed off about that.”
Currently, Pak is in sole possession of third place with the same score of 7-under 63, but in his defense, he hasn’t teed off for the day yet. That comes up at 2:40 p.m. ET. In other words, he can still win, so this is definitely something to keep an eye on.
Rookie John Pak cards the lowest round of his PGA Tour career on Day One at Colonial.
The former Florida State Seminole fired a 7-under 63, highlighted by a hole-out eagle on his first hole of the day, the 392-yard par-4 10th. Pak dunked one in from 142 yards out.
