A former Californian college track star athlete died aged 23 of a brain aneurysm only three months after receiving her master’s degree, according to statements.

Shelby Daniele, a former California Polytechnic State University track and field student-athlete, had a fatal brain aneurysm late Sep. 24, Brian Brandenburg said Sep. 25.

Brandenburg is the father of Eva Brandenburg, also a Cal Poly student-athlete.

Paying tribute to his two daughters on National Daughter’s Day, Brandenburg also wrote, “But my joy is crushed tonight. The young lady that was the driving force in Eva’s decision to run Track at Cal Poly, Shelby Daniele, passed away last night of a brain aneurism [sic]. Completely heartbreaking.”

Eva Brandenburg committed herself to the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Division 1 school earlier this year, her alma mater Homestead High School Athletic Department posted on X.

“Cal Poly Athletics was deeply saddened to learn of the recent passing of former Cal Poly track & field student-athlete Shelby Daniele,” a Sep. 26 statement from Cal Poly Track & Field/Cross Country read. “Shelby was an exceptional teammate, and will be missed by everyone in the Mustang family. Our condolences go out to her family.”

“Too young too die, too many her age are passing…,” a commenter reacted. Some others alleged that vaccination was responsible for Daniele’s death. (RELATED: REPORT: NBA Legend Dikembe Mutombo Dies At 58 From Brain Cancer)

Daniele, of Clovis, was a graduate student at Cal Poly, having graduated in 2023 with a bachelor’s degree in agriculture, according to the institution’s official athletics website. She graduated with a master’s degree in agriculture with distinction in June, according to her father’s Facebook account.

Daniele racked up recognition as a five-time All-Big West honoree, Cal Poly’s record holder in women’s indoor 200 meters (24.69@), Cal Poly‘s all-time second-fastest athlete in women’s indoor 60 meters (7.62@) in 2023, and Cal Poly’s all-time third-fastest athlete in women’s outdoor 200 (23.57) and joint second-fastest athlete ever in the women’s 100 meters (11.58) at the Fresno State Invitational in 2023.

Before joining Cal Poly’s Mustangs, Daniele received the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) State title in the 200m individual race with a time of 23.73 seconds while a senior at Buchanan High School in Clovis, according to the New York Post.

“Hug your children every time you can and tell them you love them every day. Please say a prayer for Shelby and her family,” Brandenburg said.
