Actress Mila Kunis said that she was raised Jewish and originally told not to discuss her faith in a video published Dec. 26.
She opened up about her religious views in the video interview with author Noa Tishby for the “BringOnTheLight” Campaign, dedicated to spreading the message of Jewish resilience, according to the Daily Mail. Kunis explained she grew up without celebrating the religious holidays.
“I always knew I was Jewish, but I was told to never talk about it,” the famous actress said.
Kunis was born in Ukraine and immigrated to the U.S. at the age of eight. She said she felt her religion was stifled because she was “in a country that didn’t allow for religion,” according to the Daily Mail.
She joined Tishby on the second night of Hanukkah and told the author that Kutcher helped her embrace and become proud of her culture and religion, Judaism.
Kunis has been married to Kutcher for nearly 10 years and also shared that their two children, Wyatt and Dimitri, have been raised to celebrate Shabbat and the holidays.
“I was raised culturally Jewish, so for me, it’s a culture, and as I had kids, and my kids very much identify with the religion aspect of it,” she said.
Kunis noted that Kutcher’s part of the faith “by choice.”
“I fell in love with my religion because he explained it to me,” she said.
Kunis leaned on Kutcher’s support by phoning him mid-interview to clarify the order in which the candles on the menorah were supposed to be lit.
“Hi babe, quick question, when you light the menorah, do you light from right to left or left to right?” Kunis asked.
“It’s right to left, babe,” he said. (RELATED: Some Of Hollywood’s Biggest Names Are Turning Away From Depravity, Towards Jesus)
“You load them right to left, you start with the center candle, and then you light them left to right.”
