“Captain America” actor Anthony Mackie tried walking back his disparaging remarks about America by writing a few quick lines Tuesday to his Instagram Story.
The star who plays the Marvel Character in the upcoming film “Captain America: Brave New World” was dragged for telling a live audience that Captain America “represents a lot of different things” before adding, “I don’t think the term ‘America’ should be one of those representations.”
Likely sensing that he had insulted the very country his character represents and ultimately damaged his own image, he made an about-face and tried to take back what he said. “Let me be clear about this, I’m a proud American and taking on the shield of a hero like CAP is the honor of a lifetime,” he wrote to social media.

For many, his update will surely prove to be too little, too late, and the damage has already been done.
Mackie continued to backstep in his most recent post.
“I have the utmost respect for those who serve and have served our country. CAP has universal characteristics that people all over the world can relate to,” he wrote on Instagram.
Does this mean he no longer thinks that Captain America stands for a lot of things that are “not American” in any way? I doubt anyone is feeling comforted by his ‘clarification,’ and the update has done nothing more than remind us of what he said in the first place.
He has already come forward to diminish the patriotism behind the very character who embodies the name of the country he represents, so nothing he can come up with now is really going to put out the flames. The internet has already ignited over his bold abandonment of all that Captain America embodies.
Fans haven’t stopped expressing their outrage on social media, and it would be hard to imagine them suddenly taking the afterthought he just shared to heart.
The ‘clarification’ in his Instagram Story will automatically delete 24 hours after it was posted, but his complete betrayal of American ideology still rings in our ears. (RELATED: Anthony Mackie Says ‘America’ Doesn’t Represent Captain America)
“Captain America: Brave New World” is slated for release Feb. 14. It will be interesting to see if his commentary has any impact on the box office success of the film.
