Canadian Man Suffers Severe Injuries Defending Wife From Polar Bear Attack Canadian Man Suffers Severe Injuries Defending Wife From Polar Bear Attack

A man suffered severe injuries early Tuesday after defending his wife from a polar bear attack on his driveway in Canada, police said.

He leaped onto the polar bear to prevent it from mauling his wife, causing serious injuries to his arm and legs, the Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service said in a statement posted on Facebook. The victim is expected to recover.

Reports of gunfire drew police from the Fort Severn First Nation detachment to the residence, according to law enforcement. Police were also alerted of a potential bear sighting in the vicinity.

Police said they found a dead polar bear at the scene. They learned the husband was taken to a community nursing station for evaluation and treatment of his wounds. (RELATED: Woman And Child Mauled To Death After Polar Bear Wanders Into Alaskan Village)

The couple had gone out to search for their dogs at approximately 5 a.m. when the bear attacked the wife, police said.

The victim’s wife slipped and fell onto the ground as he came to her defense, police said. After that, the polar bear caused the man’s “serious but non-life-threatening” injuries.

A neighbor showed up with a firearm and shot the bear multiple times during the incident, according to police. The offending animal fled to a forested area nearby where it died from its gunshot wounds.

To prevent further danger, police conducted a search of the area to ensure other bears were not present in the community.
