Case for ‘Maryland Dad’ Implodes on Democrats

Case for 'Maryland Dad' Implodes on Democrats Case for 'Maryland Dad' Implodes on Democrats

It appears the legacy media and the Democrat (I repeat myself) narrative about the deported El Salvadoran “Maryland dad” is reaching its endgame as more information about his behavior comes to light.

According to multiple reports, House Democrat Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has privately told fellow Democrats to stop taking junkets down to El Salvador to visit the deported man in prison to perform supposed “welfare checks.” Jeffries has denied the report, but it wouldn’t be surprising.

In case you’ve been living under a rock, this long saga is about Kilmar Abrego Garcia, an alleged MS-13 gang member who was deported back to his home country as the Trump administration prioritizes deporting illegal aliens who are convicted criminals and gang members.

Democrats have been caught between two messages.

The first is that Abrego Garcia’s due process rights were violated because a 2019 court order said he couldn’t go back to El Salvador due to threats from a rival gang (a gang that has since been nearly obliterated by the country’s tough-on-crime president).

That may indeed have been an administrative mistake, but it’s hard to argue that Abrego Garcia didn’t get due process. He spent eight years in litigation making often dubious claims about the need for asylum in the U.S. He was justifiably deported. The issue at stake is whether he could be rightly sent to El Salvador and not somewhere else.

As I wrote before, this “due process” argument is dubious at best coming from Democrats. During the four years of the Biden administration, they did everything in their power to subvert U.S. immigration law to allows millions of illegal aliens to flood into the country.

The legal deportation mess is entirely their fault. In fact, it’s clear they were hoping this would be a messy process so they could stonewall deportations and wait out the Trump presidency.

The even worse argument from Democrats and their media allies has been that Abrego Garcia was just a good, decent family man minding his own business when the mean old Trump administration nabbed him and deported him.

That argument has entirely imploded as more information gets out.

Not only have law enforcement and the courts said that Abrego Garcia is likely a member of MS-13, but police have also alleged that he’s been involved in human trafficking. Now, more documents have been released about his wife’s 2020 protective order against him.

The petition for protection by Abrego Garcia’s wife, Jennifer Vasquez Sura, includes, according to a report on Wednesday by Fox News, allegations of “kicking, slapping, shoving, mental injury of a child, and detaining against will.”

The report says that Sura told authorities that Abrego Garcia “took [her] phone around 1:00 a.m., and in the morning, he wanted to take my car, but I told him I was going to go out with my kids. He then got angry. I went upstairs to make food for my kids, but he turned off the stove.”

She also said that she has a recording where Abrego Garcia “told [her] ex-mother-in-law that even if he kills me, no one can do anything to him.”

The petition contains other claims against Abrego Garcia, too: that he dragged her “by the hair” from her car; that he broke her son’s tablet; that he broke doors, shoved her against the wall, and smashed objects around her home.

“At this point, I am afraid to be close to him,” Sura said in the petition. “I have multiple photos/videos of how violent he can be and all the bruises he [has] left me.”

Fox News’ Bill Melugin put out the latest, now lengthy, checklist of the accusations against Abrego Garcia on X.

This is the man Democrats wanted to make their centerpiece of messaging against the Trump administration and have desperately tried to promote for weeks. The Trump administration has used this story to highlight the problem with mass illegal immigration.

It’s quite remarkable and hard to see this as anything other than a massive unforced error from a political party that has entirely lost touch with most Americans on immigration and so many other issues.

Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., who just can’t give up the ghost on this story, has done little more than get a photo op only marginally less embarrassing than Jane Fonda’s trip to Vietnam.

My guess is that this story, which derived far too much attention to begin with, will now drop out of the news.

Democrats will almost certainly try to dredge up another, more sympathetic story to try to drag down the Trump administration’s deportation efforts.

But this whole thing goes to show just how wedded the Left is to open borders and how beholden Democrats are to their left flank. They will find any excuse to ensure that an endless chain of people—including gang members and wife beaters—can come into the country whether the American people want it or not.

This exchange between a Daily Caller reporter and Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., sums up their attitude perfectly:
