Democrats have always been unwilling to learn anything about guns or even most gun laws before spouting off their gun control talking points. Still, they have somehow become even lazier on this issue over the past few years.
Two people were killed and several more injured at a shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, on Monday. Like clockwork, President Joe Biden trotted out a copy-and-paste statement about how “We need Congress to act. Now,” and that we need “commonsense gun safety laws: Universal background checks. A national red flag law. A ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.” Vice President Kamala Harris echoed those same positions along with “safe storage laws.”
Would any of this have stopped the shooting in Madison? Given that the shooter was a 15-year-old, we can confidently say that universal background checks and red flag laws would have done nothing because 15-year-olds are obviously not allowed to own guns. An assault weapons ban? The gun that the shooter used was a 9mm pistol, not any kind of rifle, so that one is out, too. We still don’t have all the information on how the shooter acquired that gun, but it is pretty clear there aren’t many legal solutions to a 15-year-old getting hold of a gun, which is already against the law.
Any time there is a high-profile shooting, Democrats like Biden and Harris roll out these tired talking points that do not apply. We get cries for assault weapons bans even when “assault weapons” (normal semiautomatic rifles) aren’t used or when they are used in a state that already has an “assault weapons ban,” as was the case in New York. We get demands for “universal background checks” or “expanded background checks” when most shooters already acquire their guns illegally.

The liberal Washington Post has twice found that gun control proposals would do nothing to prevent most shootings and that various law enforcement errors on already existing gun restrictions are the problem. There is also the fact that Democrats going soft on existing gun crimes emboldens criminals, with Democratic politicians demanding more gun control restrictions while Democratic prosecutors refuse to enforce them. Biden himself is guilty of this, pardoning his son’s gun crimes while demanding that law-abiding gun owners be further restricted.
At the end of the day, the Democratic moralizing on gun control is matched only by how obscenely lazy Democrats are on this issue. They do not have any solutions, nor do they care to pretend they are trying to find them. They rely only on stale talking points that have no connection to any of the incidents they cite and no basis in reality and use those to try to bully the holdouts into submission.
