A recently circulated video showed Denzel Washington seemingly losing his cool with a group of fans while attending New York City’s Museum of Modern Art, Wednesday.
The legendary actor arrived to attend a film benefit honoring Samuel L. Jackson and paused briefly to interact with fans. Several people had gathered outside of the building in hopes of getting an autograph or selfie with the star.
Washington engaged with some fans and posed for photos, then began to walk toward the building. He abruptly stopped, turned aroundand got into a heated exchange with a group of fans, making it known how displeased he was with their behavior.
It’s unclear what triggered this response from Washington, but it appeared that someone in the group said something that upset him as he was walking away.
The video showed the 69-year-old Academy-Award winner walking right up to the group with an angry look on his face. Washington was then heard saying, “Put this down. I heard you,” although it was unclear what object he was referencing.
“You talk about showing love … respect me,” Washington said, as he lectured the people standing in front of him.
One person in the group was heard saying, “We always do!” but that didn’t seem to be sufficient for Washington.
He continued scolding his fans, but offered them a shot to meet him later.
“I said, ‘I’ll see you when I get out.’ Which part of that don’t ya’ll understand?” Washington said. (RELATED: John Mellencamp Reams Fans, Storms Off Stage When Crowd Gets Annoyed By Rant)
“Or not, or not! We can do it another way. I can do it both ways, ya’ll” he said.
The famous actor disengaged, turned around, and walked inside the building, putting an abrupt stop to the encounter.
