Director Todd Phillips Explains Why Woman-On-Woman Kiss Was Cut From ‘Joker 2’

A photo of Lady Gaga kissing a female on the set of “Joker: Folie a Deux” went viral, but director Todd Phillips left it out of the final cut of the film.

The internet exploded when a photograph of Lady Gaga locking lips with a woman in the crowd began circulating, but fans noticed that the scene was missing from the movie. The deleted scene depicted Lady Gaga’s character, Lee, grabbing a woman outside of a courthouse, drawing her closer while passionately kissing her on the lips. The prolific director explained why he intentionally scrapped the highly anticipated clip in an interview with Entertainment Weekly published Monday.

“It had dialogue in it, and, all of a sudden, I wanted it to be more of a music and vibe moment,” the director told Entertainment Weekly.

Phillips said that an unexpected shift in direction made the scene feel out of place, so he decided to discard it altogether.

“For that moment to have played, it needed dialogue behind it,” Phillips said. “Meaning, the woman said something, and then Gaga stopped and did this thing, and it just kind of got in the way of the moment.”

Actor Joaquin Phoenix clinched an Academy Award for “Best Actor” for his role in the first “Joker” movie, which also starred Lady Gaga. The film grossed over $1 billion in worldwide box office earnings, according to the New York Post. The sequel has not enjoyed the same success.

Many moviegoers have taken to social media to complain about “Joker: Folie a Deux,” with box office earnings falling far short of expectations. The film grossed $37.8 million its first weekend, barely exceeding half of its expected $70 million debut. (RELATED: Lady Gaga Surprises Fans, Shares Upcoming Release Of Movie-Related Album)

Gaga reportedly joined the project without reading the entire script.
