A video released appearing to show the “Shahs of Sunset” star Mike Shouhed violently choking and manhandling his then-fiancee Thursday.
The shocking video of the alleged incident occurred in 2022, according to TMZ. It appeared to depict Shouhed approaching Paulina Ben-Cohen, his fiancee at the time, from behind, grabbing her by the hair and throwing her to the ground as a clothing rack falls onto her. The video appears to depict Shouhed smother, choke and manhandle Ben-Cohen.
A judge ordered Shouhed to attend a year-long mental health diversion program Tuesday after being charged for assault and battery in 2022, the outlet reported. The judge also provided a protective order for Ben-Cohen and told Shouhed not to threaten or engage in coercion or violence.
Other video snippets included footage from a child’s playroom, where Shouhed allegedly grabbed Ben-Cohen from behind, wrapped his arms around her throat and seemingly choked her while tossing her around the room. Ben-Cohen appears to defend herself by punching and slapping him.
Ben-Cohen claimed Shouhed went to get a firearm, which prompted her and the live-in nanny to contact law enforcement. Police say they saw visible marks on Ben-Cohen’s body and arrested Shouhed, according to the outlet.
Court documents noted that city attorney’s office appealed some of the rulings against Shouhed, which is why he’s only entering the diversion program now, the outlet reported.
Ben-Cohen claimed Shouhed had physically assaulted her before.
Ben-Cohen filed a civil lawsuit against Shouhed for assault, battery, gender violence and intentionally inflicting emotional distress, according to the outlet. She also sued him earlier in 2024.
Shouhed’s attorney, George Mgdesyan, issued a statement addressing the video.
“This is not the full video,” he told TMZ.
“The altercation initiated in the living room. My client was trying to stop her from yelling because the kids were asleep,” Shouhed’s attorney continued. “My client didn’t want her to smoke inside the house because there’s a child with a health issue and it’s not in their best interest.” (RELATED: REPORT: Police Arrest Clint Eastwood’s Daughter)
“What’s shown in the video is my client trying to calm her down and that’s when he goes behind her and tells her not to yell. There’s way more to the video than provided and this is why my client is getting the diversion that he is,” he said.
