Firefighters responded Saturday morning to a reported explosion at a medical building in Palm Springs, prompting road closures and an active emergency response.
The blast occurred around 11 a.m. at the American Reproductive Centers facility on North Indian Canyon Drive, near East Tachevah Drive, according to local news outlet KESQ. City officials said multiple people across the area reported hearing a loud boom, and emergency responders urged the public to stay away from the scene.
Additional reporting from The Desert Sun indicates that more than an hour after the explosion, police and ambulances were still arriving near the site, just across from Desert Regional Medical Center. Helicopters circled overhead as confused pedestrians strolled nearby, unaware of the severity of the incident just blocks away. Palm Springs resident Tamara Cash, speaking to The Desert Sun, said she was jogging nearby when she heard the explosion.
“It was so loud it shook me,” she said, adding that she ran past the site and saw blown-out windows at the clinic and what appeared to be damage at Desert Regional. “All I could hear was alarms going off in different buildings,” she said.
However, Desert Regional Medical Center spokesperson Rich Ramhoff told The Desert Sun that the explosion did not occur on the hospital campus. The affected building, he said, is an independently-owned medical office located across Indian Canyon Drive from the hospital.
Palm Springs police have blocked off the 1100 block of North Indian Canyon Drive as fire crews continue to monitor the smoldering building. According to The Desert Sun, traffic near the intersection of East Vista Chino and North Palm Canyon Drive remains open but is heavily congested, as drivers try to navigate the confusion. The road closure appears to begin just before East Camino Monte Vista.
Social media footage shared by local residents and compiled by The Desert Sun shows smoke pouring from the damaged facility and emergency vehicles swarming the area.
Authorities have not yet released details regarding injuries or the cause of the explosion. Fire and police officials remain on scene, and the investigation is ongoing.
