“One Tree Hill” star Bethany Joy Lenz revealed she knew her job involved a whole lot of “f**king and sucking” when she accepted the role.
The famous actress discussed the nature of her work in her upcoming memoir “Dinner for Vampires,” and recalled an awkward conversation she had with her manager just hours prior to her final chemistry read for the show, according to Entertainment Weekly. An executive from the show ordered her manager to make things very clear to Lenz, she said.
“I have a direct quote that I’ve been asked to relay to you, to make sure you know exactly what you’re getting into before you sign this contract,” she recounted her manager telling her.
The executive’s message was, “You tell her this show is about f**king and sucking and if she’s gonna have a problem with that, she shouldn’t come in tomorrow,” according to Entertainment Weekly.
Lenz signed on for nine seasons as Haley James Scott on “One Tree Hill,” in spite of the warning she said was issued.
The famous actress was brought up in evangelical Christianity and had previously turned down a far less explicit role, but she didn’t want to give up on the opportunity she was given, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Lenz wrote in her memoir that she felt drawn to the show because it “felt different from most bubble-gum TV with subliminal agendas,” the outlet reported.
“Grit didn’t scare me, and the One Tree Hill pilot had grit,” Lenz said.
Lenz said she was able to take solace in playing the role of the “awkward girl next door,” who she perceived to be the “most wholesome” member of the primary cast, according to Entertainment Weekly.
“I didn’t feel too at risk of being objectified,” she wrote in her memoir.
“I believed in this show and its ability to send meaningful, uplifting messages to the audience.”
Lenz stayed on for the entire run of the show, but claimed the “f**king and sucking” comment haunted her whenever she attempted to push back against some of the show’s content, according to Entertainment Weekly. She specifically wrote about one particular scene that involved her filming while wearing only a bra, the outlet reported.
“When I stood my ground as a matter of religious modesty, my manager would get a call, ‘She’s being difficult again. We told you what this show was about,’” Lenz wrote in her memoir, according to Entertainment Weekly. (RELATED: Nicole Kidman Says She Paused Filming Because She Didn’t Want To Orgasm Anymore
“And, in fairness, they did,” she continued.
“The ‘f**king and sucking’ executive has been very clear about that. I guess I just looked at my character and figured that would be other people’s storylines,” she said.
