An American Airlines flight bound to India from New York was diverted to Rome due to a “possible security issue,” the airline confirmed to the Daily Caller.
Flight 292 landed safely at the Leonardo da Vinci Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) early Sunday after departing from John F. Kennedy International Airport, American Airlines said in a statement.
An official briefed on the incident told ABC that a bomb threat was received via email. Flight Radar 24 also reported on X that the plane was diverted “following a bomb threat for the flight.”
American Airlines said the concern was “determined to be non-credible,” however an inspection of the aircraft was necessary per the Indira Gandhi International Airport’s (DEL) protocol. Upon its arrival in Rome, law enforcement inspected and cleared the aircraft for re-departure.
“The flight will stay in FCO overnight to allow for required crew rest before continuing to DEL as soon as possible tomorrow,” American Airlines said.
“Safety and security are our top priorities and we thank our customers for their understanding,” the airline added.

Passengers were reportedly being taken by bus to the terminal for screening.
The diversion comes amid a string of reported aviation incidents. A Delta Air Lines plane traveling from Minneapolis on Feb. 21 crash-landed at the Toronto Pearson International Airport. The aircraft flipped on its back during the landing. All the people on board made it out alive with some sustaining injuries.
