After two weeks of increases, gas prices are trending downward again. The national average cost for a gallon of regular gas decreased to $3.114 on Friday, according to AAA.
Friday’s pricing means a gallon of regular gas is now less expensive than a week ago when it was $3.162. Fuel costs are cheaper on Friday than a month ago when regular gas was $3.12 per gallon. Moreover, it also means that the national average price for a gallon of regular gas is less expensive today than on former President Joe Biden’s last day in office when the cost was $3.125 per gallon. It also costs less money for fuel today than a year ago, when regular gas was $3.294 per gallon.
Lower gas prices are a welcomed sight for all in the country. The nation has been plagued with high gas costs since Biden’s first year in office. These high costs have affected the economy and people’s finances. Under Biden, fuel costs increased significantly, especially compared to his predecessor, President Donald Trump. Between Jan. 2017 and Jan. 2021, the average price for a gallon of regular gas was $2.476.
Comparatively, gas prices hit over $3 per gallon beginning in June 2021, less than six months after Biden’s inauguration. During his term, the cost of a gallon of regular gas reached $4.929 in June 2022, the most expensive gas in the nation’s history. Gas prices began to drop the next month. Fuel costs fluctuated between 2022 and 2024 but remained higher than when Trump was in office. By April 2024, fuel costs were trending upward and peaked for the year before starting to fall again in May.
Eventually, gas prices dropped to $3.01 per gallon by mid-December. They began to rise again after Christmas and then fell on Jan. 20, the day Trump began his second term. Gas prices never returned to the under $3 per gallon price point. It’s a sight that many in the country hope to see during Trump’s second term.
Fuel costs vary nationwide, with some states much higher than others. As gas prices drop in some parts of the country, fuel costs rise in others. On Friday, prices ranged from $2.672 per gallon in Mississippi to $4.799 in California.
