The national average price for a gallon of regular gas remained steady after setting a new low for 2024 on Tuesday. Thursday’s price for regular gas is $3.063 per gallon, according to AAA. This is the same price as on Tuesday. On Wednesday, there was a very minuscule increase when the price was $3.066.
Gas prices are at their lowest price point since June 2021 when the average cost for a gallon of gas was $3.064, according to the Energy Information Administration. Since then, high gas prices at over $3 per gallon (and, for a brief period, over $4 per gallon) have been a financial burden to drivers.
High gas prices hampered the Biden administration for over three years. After hitting record highs in 2022, the highest in the nation’s history, gas prices began to decrease later in the year. After another spike in 2023, gas prices began declining again in May 2024 and have continued to fall each month.
Yet despite months of decreases at the pumps, gas prices remain higher today than when President-elect Donald Trump was in office between January 2017 and January 2021. With Trump set to take office on Jan. 20, 2025, it remains to be seen what will happen with gas prices during Trump’s second term.
Meanwhile, gas prices continue to fluctuate across the nation. Currently, Hawaii has the most expensive gas prices in the country at $4.574 per gallon. Virginia
Gas prices in Virginia fell to $2.982 on Thursday. This is after hovering around the $3-per-gallon range for the last week. On Tuesday, the state’s average cost for a gallon of regular gas dropped slightly to $2.997. On Friday, the average price for a gallon of regular gas in Virginia was $3.015. A week ago, it was $3.012. Despite the recent fluctuations, the decrease in gas prices will come as a relief to Virginia drivers as Thursday’s price is less expensive than a month ago, when a gallon of regular gas was $3.081.
Maryland
After a recent surge in gas prices in Maryland, which saw an increase of nearly twenty cents in less than two weeks, the average cost for a gallon of regular gas decreased on Wednesday to $3.157. This was an almost four-cent drop from Wednesday when the cost was $3.199 per gallon. Prices remain more expensive than a week ago when regular gas cost $3.11 per gallon. The same holds for prices a month ago, albeit ever-so-slightly, when a gallon of regular gas was $3.155.
Delaware
Gas prices in Delaware decreased on Thursday to a new price of $3.081 per gallon. A week ago, a gallon of regular gas in the state was nearly eight cents less expensive, costing $3.006. Until recently, gas prices in the First State fluctuated between $3 and $2.95 per gallon. Due to the surge in Delaware’s gas prices, a gallon of regular gas costs slightly more right now than a month ago, when it was $3.073.

Washington, D.C.
Gas prices decreased on Thursday in Washington, D.C., coming in at a price of $3.240 per gallon. Prices have remained steady over the last month fluctuating between $3.25 and $3.30. This holds true for gas prices from a week ago, when a gallon of regular gas was $3.256. A month ago, a gallon of regular gas was slightly more expensive, costing $3.309.
