The average price for a gallon of regular gas slightly increased on Tuesday, coming in at $3.134, according to AAA. On Monday, the cost was $3.13 per gallon. 

Gas prices on Tuesday were less expensive than a week ago, when the national average for regular gas was $3.163 per gallon. Prices today are also less expensive than a month ago when drivers paid $3.218 for a gallon of regular gas. Moreover, the current price is the least expensive gas has been in the country since January 2024, when the average price was $3.075.

Gas prices are an important topic heading into the presidential election next Tuesday. With President Joe Biden deciding not to seek reelection, Vice President Kamala Harris, now the Democratic presidential nominee, has to indicate how she will address the country’s gas prices and energy costs and how both affect the economy and people’s finances. Gas prices remain higher than when former President Donald Trump was in office.

Virginia

Unlike the national average, the price of gas in Virginia decreased on Tuesday. The current price in the state for a gallon of regular gas is $3.052, compared to Monday’s price of $3.058. This week’s prices are slightly lower than a week ago when a gallon of regular gas was $3.074. However, Tuesday’s price is more expensive than the price of gas in Virginia from a month ago, which was $3.01 per gallon.

Maryland

The average price of gas in Maryland also dropped on Tuesday. A gallon of regular gas now costs drivers in the state $3.131, compared to Monday’s price of $3.133. Last week, gas in the state was $3.151 per gallon, and a month ago, regular gas in Maryland was much more expensive at $3.246 per gallon.

Delaware

The average price for a gallon of regular gas in Delaware remained the same as it did on Monday: $3.045 per gallon. This was a slight decrease from last week when it cost residents $3.066 per gallon. It is also cheaper to buy gas on Tuesday in the First State than a month ago when the price was $3.188 per gallon.

Washington, D.C.

Gas prices in Washington, D.C., also decreased on Tuesday, coming in at $3.297. Tuesday’s price was slightly more expensive than the cost of gas a week ago, when a gallon of regular cost drivers in the nation’s capital a fee of $3.291 per gallon. A month ago, the price of gas in Washington, D.C. was $3.312 per gallon.

Texas

Texas is the state with the least expensive gas prices in the nation. As of Tuesday, drivers in Texas pay $2.686 per gallon for regular gas, far below the national average. This is actually a slight increase from Monday when people in the Lone Star State paid $2.667 per gallon. A month ago, gas in the state was slightly higher, coming in at $2.741 for a gallon of regular gas.

California

California remains the state with the most expensive gas prices in the nation on Tuesday, coming in at $4.587 per gallon. This was just slightly more than the price of gas in Hawaii, which is $4.585. Despite being the state with the highest gas prices in the nation, prices have dropped recently. A week ago, regular gas was $4.63 per gallon and a month ago, people in California paid $4.695 for a gallon of gas.
