Gas prices are on the rise throughout the country as the national average cost for a gallon of regular gas rose to $3.22 on Thursday, according to AAA. This was a slight increase from Wednesday’s price of $3.213 per gallon.

Thursday’s increase marked the third straight day that the cost of gas rose following weeks of falling prices throughout the nation.

Gas prices remain a vital topic heading into the 2024 presidential election. With President Joe Biden deciding not to seek reelection, Vice President Kamala Harris, now the Democratic presidential nominee, has to indicate how she will address the country’s gas prices and energy costs and how both affect the economy and people’s finances.

Despite the recent trend of decreases, gas prices have fluctuated throughout the year and vary significantly among states. Overall, gas prices remain higher than when Trump was in office. Delaware

Delaware no longer has the cheapest gas in the Delmarva region on Thursday. The average price for a gallon of regular gas in the First State soared to $3.099. This was a significant increase from yesterday when it cost drivers in the state only $2.973 per gallon. Thursday’s pricing was also higher than a week ago when gas cost $2.983 a gallon and a month ago when gas was $3.195.

Maryland

A gallon of regular gas in Maryland on Thursday is $3.18. Like Delaware, this was a rather significant price jump in one day as a gallon of regular gas in the state cost only $3.075 on Wednesday. Prices in Maryland are only slightly less expensive than a week ago when a gallon of regular gas was $3.079. However, due to weeks of decreasing gas prices, the cost of gas on Thursday is still much more affordable than a month ago, when the price was $3.283, despite the recent increases.

Virginia

Virginia is now the state with the least expensive gas in the Delmarva area. The price for a gallon of regular gas in the state on Thursday is $3.022. Incidentally, this was a slight increase from Wednesday’s price of $3.012 per gallon – the same price as a week ago in Virginia. Prices are much more affordable now in Virginia than a month ago, when gas in the state cost $3.223 per gallon.

Washington, D.C.

Unlike the other states in the area, gas prices in the nation’s capital decreased on Thursday with a new price of $3.318 per gallon. This was slightly less expensive than yesterday’s price of $3.323. Both prices are less expensive than a week ago when gas in the nation’s capital was $3.39. It’s also cheaper than from a month ago when gas cost $3.602 per gallon.

Mississippi

Mississippi remains the state with the most affordable gas in the country, coming in with a price of $2.711 on Thursday. This was also the same price as Wednesday. Gas prices are slightly less expensive in Mississippi than a week ago, when gas was $2.721. It is also less expensive today for regular gas than it was a month ago in the state, when a gallon cost $2.896.

California

California is the state with the most expensive gas prices in the nation on Thursday, coming in with a price of $4.715 per gallon for regular gas. Incidentally, this is a slight decrease from Wednesday’s price of $4.725 per gallon. Gas prices have fluctuated quite a bit in the Golden State in recent weeks. A week ago, it cost $4.769 for a gallon of gas in the state, but a month ago, regular gas was cheaper than Thursday’s price, when it cost residents only $4.605 per gallon.
