In USA Fencing as a Senior Women’s Foilest, 31-year-old Stephanie Turner protested a biological male opponent by taking a knee against them. Recently in the USA Fencing event, The Cherry Blossom Open, Turner was set to take on Redmond Sullivan, a man who identifies as a woman.
In the aftermath of Turner‘s knee, she was handed a “black card,” which is the worst punishment you can get in the sport of fencing. The black card resulted in Turner being disqualified from being able to compete in the tournament, and on top of that, she was escorted out of the building. She’s also facing potential suspensions when it comes to events in the future.
Speaking with OutKick in an interview, Turner said that her Christian faith is what gave her the bravery to protest unfair treatment towards females in women’s sports. (RELATED: Female Fencer Bravely Takes Knee, Forfeits Against Trans Opponent In Protest)
“I prayed to God and I just asked him for guidance and I called members of my church to help me to figure out what I wanted to do,” said Turner. “I prayed, and I said, ‘God, if this is something that you want me to do, please put Redmond in my pool round or my direct elimination and I will take a knee. But, if this is not something that you want me to do, then… show me by not having… he and I fence face-to-face.’”
Turner continued.
“There [was] a potential I was never going to face him, and then I’d never forfeit. And then there was the option that he’d end up in my pool, and then I’d forfeit, and I took that as a sign from God that that’s what he wanted me to do. When it happened, I took the knee.”
