Democratic New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy was reportedly influenced by Kim Kardashian in a case involving the release of convicted murderer Dawn Jackson.

Jackson is serving 25 years for the deadly stabbing of her step-grandfather in 1999, ccording to TMZ. She claimed he had sexually abused her from childhood, but her allegations were never aired in court. She claimed her public defender said she should plead guilty to first-degree murder at the time. Whether or not her case was handled unfairly remains to be determined, but it seems wild to think a selfie-loving reality television star that rose to fame because of a sex tape should be the one nudging this case forward, according to sources.

There’s something seriously wrong with the fact that Kardashian has become the trusted voice that advocates for justice reform.

It is believed that Jackson wrote a number of letters to Kardashian in an attempt to garner her assistance and get her involved in this case, according to TMZ. Kardashian is backing the inmate in spite of the fact that she and Jackson have never spoken directly with one another, sources said. This means a convicted murderer — guilty or not — could be set free because they got the attention of a celebrity — without ever speaking in person about the details of this complex case. This reflects so badly on our judicial system. At what point did we start relying on reality ‘stars’ to bring forward court cases that are as serious as this one?

If Gov. Murphy felt it necessary to push this case forward, the more respectable approach would have been to go through formal legal channels. The case could have been reopened by a lawyer or investigator but the mere fact that an incarcerated person would think to reach out to Kardashian as a lifeline suggests our legal system is in a critically unbalanced state — and our social media influencers have way too much power.

Murphy is now commuting Jackson’s 30-year sentence and letting her out of prison five years early, according to TMZ.

Jackson is scheduled to get out of prison and will be supervised under parole until March 23, 2029, according to a statement issued Monday by the governor’s office.

The fact that we are allowing the sex tape star and SKIMS founder to invade the judicial system in this manner is highly troubling. She cannot possibly be the go-to, or the most qualified person for this case. (RELATED: Kim Kardashian Posts Photo Of Innocent Man To Her 364 Million Followers While Referencing Death Row Inmate)

Kardashian has helped free Alice Marie Johnson and others from behind bars and has openly expressed her passion for justice reform, but our advice for those in need — get a real lawyer. This isn’t a social media campaign, lives are at stake here.
