A video released Tuesday by the Daily Mail showed the moment a crocodile viciously attacked an elderly man and dragged him into the water.
The horrifying scene allegedly unfolded Monday at the Cimory Dairyland center in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, according to the outlet. The man, described as a grandfather, sat among other tourists. The animal was reportedly rescued from a flood the week before. The crocodile was believed to be a “lucky” reptile and was kept at the theme park so fans could make their offerings, the outlet reported.
The video shows the elderly man confidently lean over and reach his arm out to offer the crocodile some food, only for the animal to attack him almost instantly. The predator then latches onto his arm and violently yanks him into the water.
Horrified onlookers begin screaming as the crocodile thrashes the old man around in its jaws. He is tossed around like a ragdoll until the crocodile’s attack stops.
In some parts of the dark footage, the man is submerged in the water. The animal appears to have full control of the situation, rendering the man helpless under the pressure of its strong jaws.
The Daily Mail reported that firefighters arrived on-scene and rushed the elderly visitor to the hospital to treat a seriously wounded arm. The video shows the elderly man being carried away to safety and it was apparent that his situation was serious.
Siti Aisyah, a witness, described the incident to the Daily Mail.
“The grandfather was bitten by a crocodile when he wanted to give him food. The residents immediately evacuated him and he was rushed to a hospital because his hand was badly injured,” Aisyah said.
Hasanuddin, chief of the local fire department, told the outlet that the animal was rescued from a flooded residential area on Feb. 12, then transported to the Cimory Dairyland center, a tourist site boasting other animals and exhibits.
Officials believed the crocodile would garner donations from visitors but have since surrendered the crocodile to specialized wildlife workers to be released appropriately, according to the Daily Mail.
“When we arrived, residents were already crowded at the location and directed us to the victim, so the evacuation process was quick,” Hasanuddin said.
The fire chief cautioned that this crocodile was likely not alone before it’s capture. (RELATED: Children Scream In Terror As Giant Fish Bites Head Of Mermaid Performer)
“We received information that this crocodile was previously seen near a landfill and had laid eggs on land. If there is one female crocodile, there is likely a male crocodile still lurking around,” Hasanuddin said.
