Man charged with immigration fraud

A suburban Chicago businessman has been indicted on federal fraud charges for allegedly providing false and fraudulent information to U.S. authorities to obtain immigration benefits for his foreign national clients. Sosa Cardona operated Delta Global Solutions, which assisted individuals in applying for asylum, immigrant visas and other immigration benefits. According to an indictment, Cardona conspired with two employees of his firm to knowingly provide false and fraudulent information to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services on behalf of his clients.

Tax scam warning

Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza is warning the public to be on the lookout for tax scams. Her office said con artists will pose as an IRS employee, contacting people by text, email or phone and then asking for personal information. Some calls may be threatening, saying the taxpayer needs to send money right away to correct a problem on their return. Mendoza reminds Illinoisans the IRS’ preferred method of communication is through the mail.

Lottery winnings expire soon

The Illinois Lottery says time is running out for an unclaimed lottery ticket. The $100,000 winning Powerball ticket was purchased at a Centralia gas station last March. Winners have one year from the original drawing date to claim their prize, so the expiration date is drawing near. Lottery officials said the ticket is one of eleven Illinois lottery prizes currently unclaimed, all totaling $5.3 million.
