Jerry Seinfeld tore a strip off of Ethical Culture Fieldston School in New York City, saying it coddles kids and makes them soft.
Seinfeld criticized the school for excusing high school students “who feel too emotionally distressed” the day after Election Day, according to a phone interview Tuesday with The New York Times. The school also noted that psychologists will be available during the week to provide counseling.
The famous actor and comedian said he pulled his son out of the school over similar stunts that left him questioning the school’s overall messaging and leniency.
The New York Times referenced a section of the email directed to members of the school’s community titled “Election Day support,” in which Stacey Bobo, principal of the upper school, said that the institution “acknowledges that this may be a high-stakes and emotional time for our community.”
She said the school “will create space to provide students with the support they may need” and went on to note that “no homework will be assigned on Election Day,” according to The New York Times.
Seinfeld’s two sons previously attended Fieldston. The comedian lent his voice to the conversation, saying that these kinds of decisions led to his younger son transferring to Riverdale Country School, which is also elite, in the eight grade, according to The New York Times.
“This is why the kids hated it,” Seinfeld told the publication.
“What kind of lives have these people led that makes them think that this is the right way to handle young people? To encourage them to buckle. This is the lesson they are providing, for ungodly sums of money,” he said.
The school’s fees are upwards of $65,000 a year, according to The Times. (RELATED: ‘End Of Your Comedy’: Jerry Seinfeld Blames ‘Extreme Left’ For Ruining Sitcom TV)
