Kevin Costner will star in the upcoming surf thriller “Headhunters” and is taking on triple duty as he also assumes the role of producer and co-writer of the hot new project.
Costner will be in good company for the series and is expected to work alongside co-writer and director Steven Holleran, producer Scott Steindorff and his Stone Village Films, and Daniel Zovatto, who co-stars on the project, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter published Thursday. The Academy Award winner collaborated on the script that will see him in a whole new light, in a setting that is far different than the prairie-based scenes found in “Yellowstone.”
The production is being described as “a mashup that combines the ‘kinetic energy of surf culture with the suspense of horror,’” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Costner will play the role of Lazer, a washed-up American ex-patriot that comes from a very mysterious past. His character winds up living in Bali, Indonesia, and embarks on a mission to recruit a group of surfers and take them to an uncharted island to find the “perfect wave.” The team is lead by a local photographer named Bima and the unsuspecting travelers are forced to contend with an ancient tribe of headhunters that protectively guard the island.
“What ensues is an adventure turned survival story of epic and bloody proportions on a tropical island which once seemed to be paradise … but is actually closer to hell,” the synopsis of the movie reads.
“Headhunters” is already in pre-production in Hawaii and is slated for release in November.
A source close to the situation said studios and streamers are currently vying for distribution rights and casting is underway, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Stendorff boasted about the opportunity to work alongside Costner on the upcoming project.
“For decades, my friend Kevin and I have been searching for the right project to collaborate on,” he said.
“This is one of the best scripts I have seen in my career. Kevin is a legendary actor who brings so much depth and charisma to his roles and has written an iconic horror script with Steve,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. Cinematographer Ericson Core from “Point Break” and “The Fast and the Furious” also joined the team. Production design will be handled by Derek Hill from “Ozark” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.”
Lisa Lovaas from “The Amazing Spiderman 2” heads costume design.
