Tim Walz’s go-to “knucklehead” refrain couldn’t save him from a poor performance during a “60 Minutes” interview Monday night.
The vice presidential nominee has faced “stolen valor” criticism for allegedly lying about his military record and claiming that he was “a veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom,” the U.S. government’s official name for the war in Afghanistan, even though he never actually deployed to the Middle East. During Monday night’s interview on CBS News, correspondent Bill Whitaker asked Walz about his mischaracterizations regarding his military service and his visits to China, which the Minnesota governor has more than embellished. “Is that kind of misrepresentation [about things like the China issue] — isn’t that more than about just being a ‘knucklehead?’” Whitaker asked.
Walz tried to dismiss the concern by pivoting to former President Donald Trump, arguing that he was “expressing emotion, telling a story, getting a date wrong rather than [being] a pathological liar.”
“I will own up to being a knucklehead at times,” he went on to say, “but the folks closest to me know that I keep my word.”
The Minnesota Chamber of Commerce also called out Walz following the interview for claiming that his state’s business community “promoted” the paid family and medical leave policy he signed as governor.
Just the facts: @GovTimWalz received thousands of letters from businesses in every corner of the state, urging him to reconsider the one-size-fits-all mandate. #mnleghttps://t.co/PBUnOoTM2m https://t.co/rmJV9SPt1r pic.twitter.com/p7WPYqcBna

Listen, Tim is just a knucklehead. Is he a pathological liar who grossly embellished his military service during the War on Terror for political gain? Of course not. He would never do that — it’s far too dishonorable. He’s a knucklehead. We can forgive knuckleheads. Knuckleheads don’t have a cynical bone in their bodies. They might be stupid, but the endearing nature of their naiveté makes up for what they sorely lack in brains.
Next time my lady is mad at me I’m gonna hit her with the “sure I’ve been a knucklehead at times.”
Will report back with results
