I just want to say right off the bat: I do NOT agree with Sean McDonough.
ESPN broadcaster Sean McDonough will be calling the game Thursday for the NHL 4 Nations Face-Off title game, but he’s also making a plea to Americans ahead of the game: Be “better than that.”
McDonough was speaking about the anticipation around Americans potentially retaliating against Canadians for booing “The Star-Spangled Banner” during the Face-Off.
Making an appearance Tuesday on WEEI, the ESPN broadcaster stated that he’s hopeful Americans will show up in full force to support the United States hockey team as they square off against Canada in Boston. “I hope the home crowd has a lot to do with it. I hope it helps spur on Team USA,” said McDonough.
But McDonough also made a plea to Americans: Don’t boo the Canadian national anthem. Something that Canadians have done against our anthem multiple times in the Face-Off, NHL games and NBA games.
“I really hope our people don’t boo the anthem. Let’s be better than that,” said McDonough.
“I think we all have a lot of respect for what a great country Canada is. The political things that have led the Canadians recently — the booing of the anthem is a very recent development, I think we know why. I understand it from their perspective, especially having been up there for several days.”
