What a catch!

An angler based in Houston bagged an 884-pound bluefin tuna in April. When the catch gets certified, it will set a new Texas state record.

David Esslinger, the fisherman who landed the giant tuna, was forced to spend a long five hours reeling in the monster. The catch was around 160 miles off Galveston’s coast. The fish weighed in at an incredible 884 pounds, which eclipses the previous state record of 876 pounds when it comes to a Texas bluefin. That tuna was reeled in back in 2021. To put the catch further in perspective, the bluefin tuna that holds the IGFA all-tackle world record weighed a massive 1,496 pounds. The fish was caught by angler Ken Fraser in 1979 off Nova Scotia, Canada.

And get this — Esslinger didn’t have a single bite for over 30 hours before he eventually snagged this big boy.

Damn, this gets me so amped to go on vacation this summer so I can fish in peace with no interruptions. Just me, my rod and the wide open canal, ahh, it sounds nice.

Now I won’t be going for a giant tuna or anything like that, no deep sea fishing for me, but I will be going for a few exotics such as the peacock bass (which my wife caught last year), the blue tilapia, snakeheads (especially with these big guys being invasive, we’re supposed to kill them here in Florida if we catch them) and mayan cichlids.

A vacation is much needed, and I look forward to it. Wish me luck!
