The Irish get better and better with each passing year in the Freeman era, and now he’s being rewarded for it.
Marcus Freeman, the head coach of Notre Dame‘s football team, began playoff week with a team meeting and a media session, where he answered some questions. Some hours later, his day got even busier when he inked a contract extension with the Fighting Irish — so he’ll be in South Bend for the long term. Following the contract negotiation, Freeman is now one of the highest-paid coaches in college football.
“I am grateful for the Board of Trustees,” Freeman said in an official statement issued by ND‘s athletic department. “The investment they continue to pour into our program is invaluable to our student-athletes and staff. This commitment goes well beyond myself, as they are dedicated to ensuring all aspects of our program are competitive within the upper echelon of college football.”

Freeman absolutely deserves this contract extension — just look at the steady, year-by-year progression that’s led him to a 30-9 career record with the Fighting Irish and a playoff berth this season:
- 2021: 0-1
- 2022: 9-4
- 2023: 10-3
- 2024: 11-1
At this point, if I’m a Fighting Irish fan, I’m feeling pretty confident that Marcus Freeman is going to bring a national championship to South Bend — and, more importantly, fully restore past glory.
Wouldn’t that be something?
